IL-22 vs. IL-22: The Tissue Matters
نویسندگان
چکیده
IL-22 is a cytokine recently discovered to be produced by TH17 cells. Its receptor is expressed in the skin, liver, the digestive and the respiratory tract where IL-22 conveys signals of the immune system directly to the tissue. IL-22 is involved in the host defense against extracellular pathogens as well as in autoimmune inflammatory diseases and exerts, depending on the tissue and inflammatory context, proinflammatory, protective or no evident function. Focusing on immune-mediated pathology, here we will discuss the role of IL-22 in the context of tissue inflammation to provide an overview of the complex properties of this bi-functional cytokine and to disentangle some of its apparently aberrant actions.

Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Polyps Is Characterized by Increased Mucosal and Blood Th17 Effector Cytokine Producing Cells
Background: Recent studies have implied a role for Th17 cells in CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients. However, the capacity of these cells to produce Th17 cytokines is still unknown. Here we sought to quantify IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-21, and IL-22 cytokines produced by Th17 cells in mucosal tissue and peripheral blood of CRSwNP, CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) and control patients. Methods: Sa...
متن کاملThe Role of Interleukin (IL-22) in immune response to human diseases
Background and aims: IL-22 is an alpha- helical cytokine. IL-22 binds to a heterodimeric cell surface receptor composed of IL-10R2 and IL-22R1subunits. IL-22R is expressed on tissue cells, and it is absent on immune cells. L-22 and IL-10 receptor chains play a role in cellular targeting and signal transduction to selectively initiate and regulate immune responses. The aim of this study was to i...
متن کاملT cell-derived IL-22 amplifies IL-1β-driven inflammation in human adipose tissue: relevance to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Proinflammatory cytokines are critically involved in the alteration of adipose tissue biology leading to deterioration of glucose homeostasis in obesity. Here we show a pronounced proinflammatory signature of adipose tissue macrophages in type 2 diabetic obese patients, mainly driven by increased NLRP3-dependent interleukin (IL)-1β production. IL-1β release increased with glycemic deterioration...
متن کاملPathological versus protective functions of IL-22 in airway inflammation are regulated by IL-17A
IL-22 has both proinflammatory and tissue-protective properties depending on the context in which it is expressed. However, the factors that influence the functional outcomes of IL-22 expression remain poorly defined. We demonstrate that after administration of a high dose of bleomycin that induces acute tissue damage and airway inflammation and is lethal to wild-type (WT) mice, Th17 cell-deriv...
متن کاملInterleukin-22 is frequently expressed in small- and large-cell lung cancer and promotes growth in chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells.
INTRODUCTION In lung cancer, interleukin-22 (IL-22) expression within primary tissue has been demonstrated, but the frequency and the functional consequence of IL-22 signaling have not been addressed. This study aims at analyzing the cellular effects of IL-22 on lung carcinoma cell lines and the prognostic impact of IL-22 tissue expression in lung cancer patients. METHODS Biological effects o...
